His avocations are music and film studies. Lathrop was invited to build a compact disc collection that would encompass the essentials of classical, jazz, and popular music recordings to support the research and teaching needs of the School of Music faculty and students.

He serves as the audio-visual materials selector for the Music Library. His close ties to the School of Musical and to the University community have encouraged him to build special collections of music by women composers, music of Scandinavian heritage, and music from classic Hollywood films.

Currently Lathrop is enlarging the scope of the Music Library's extensive DVD and videotape collections by adding classical dance performances and films of musicals from Hollywood and Broadway. In 2006 Lathrop gave a presentation on gay composers and their music at the first GLBT ALMS International Conference.
